Introduction

The polymer (or copolymer) elastomer, based on styrene and butadiene as monomers and prepared in the process of solution polymerization, is usually named SSBR. The proprietary SSBR technology developed by Sinopec is an integrated commercial technology with organic lithium compounds as initiators and low carbon aliphatic hydrocarbon as solvent. The key structure parameters of the macromolecule can be adjusted by anionic living polymerization processes for preparing a series of SSBR grades with different properties.
SSBR can be widely used in many fields such as the automobile tyre industry. The automobile tyre made of SSBR has high strength, low heat effect in compression, especially the excellent wet skid resistance and low rolling resistance. These properties of the tyre surely are beneficial to reinforcing traffic security of the automobiles and reducing fuel consumption, and therefore are suitable to the rapid development of high way. SSBR also has the characteristics of good colour acceptance and low shrinkage rate, so the shoes made of SSBR usually possess clear tread pattern, brilliant colour and comfortable feeling. In addition, SSBR has entered many other application fields of synthetic rubbers, and has been manufactured into different industries such as tubes, plates and tapes, vibration-absorptive material, insulator and foamable material. In modifying bitumen and plastics, SSBR has already shared a great portion of the domestic market.

Technical Characteristics

1. The productive capacity of each production line can be selected in a wide range from 15,000 t/a to 100,000 t/a according to customer’s wishes.
2. The parameters of SSBR, such as compositions, sequential structure, molecular weight and its distribution as well as microstructure, can be effectively controlled with industrially available procedures. Many SSBR grades with different properties can be produced in same plant according to the requirements of market. This advantage indicates the strong adaptability and competitive edge of the SSBR technology.
3. The combination of comprehensive optimization of the technology, process control, monitoring system and facilities with the application of computer, endows the SSBR plant with preeminent characteristics of high production efficiency, superior product quality, nearly complete conversion of monomers and low energy consumption.
4. The large capacity polymerizer with special structure, the flashing technique with feature of energy-saving and the advanced DCS control system, combined as a whole, bring about an obvious technical advantage in the productive capacity, utility consumption and product quality of the single polymerize.
5. Many kinds of solvent system are optional for the plant built with the SSBR technology under the preconditions of satisfying comprehensive requirements of the process and energy savings. Hexane, cyclohexane, hexane-cyclohexane or other aliphatic hydrocarbons systems can be selected based on the specific requirement of customer.
6. The process condition of the technology is reasonable and comparatively mild. The advanced monitoring and safety system can guarantee smooth operation of the plant. In addition, the waste discharged from the plant is small, and can meet the demands stipulated in the environmental protection laws and/or regulations promulgated by European countries.
