Introduction

Styrene-butadiene-Styrene block copolymer (SBS) is a thermoplastic elastomer, which is generally ascribed to “third generation elastomer” in terms of its integration of superior properties of both plastic and rubber due to its unique molecular architecture. The copolymer exhibits excellent elastic, physical, mechanical and processing properties. SBS can be rapidly and repeatedly processed and molded while retains its elastomeric features. It is extensively applied in fields such as (1) adhesives and sealants, (2) footwear, (3) polymer modification, (4) bitumen modification for roofing, (5) asphalt modification for pavement, (6) consumer products and others. Due to its preeminent physical and mechanical properties, the application fields of SBS are still expanding rapidly, becoming a very popular material in all the related industries.

Technical Characteristics

1. Parameters of the products, such as composition, sequential structure, molecular weight and its distribution, as well as microstructures, can be effectively controlled, so that many types and grades of products (including linear, radial, and oil extended products) can be produced with the technology according to market demand.
2. The initiator used in this technology is of high activity. The dosage of the initiator added in the reaction is very small that there is no need to remove it.
3. Only a few kinds of raw materials and chemicals are required in the technology, which are readily available at low price in the market and are easily further purified.
4. The process features rapid reaction speed of polymerization, high monomer conversion and having no need to remove the unreacted monomers.
5. The finishing line can be designed as multifunctional and suitable to the requirements of client on physical form and package of the products.
6. Solvent recovery unit has high recovery of re-circulated solvent with low steam consumption.
7. The production of SSBR or LCBR can also be carried out in the very same equipment set up with the packaged technology of SBS if certain modifications are made on the finishing line of the plant.
