Introduction

S Zorb sulfur removal technology (S ZorbTM SRT) is designed to remove sulfur from full-range naphtha, from as high as 2,000 μg/g feed sulfur to as low as < 10 μg/g product sulfur, in a one-step process with high liquid yield and high octane number retention. The S Zorb™ has become the dominant technology applied in Sinopec’s gasoline upgrading program since the following milestones: Sinopec’s 1st S Zorb unit licensed by Conoco Phillips (COP) and acquisition of the technology from COP in 2007, then the transition and innovative improvement of the technology.

Technical Characteristics

1). the unique catalytic chemistry can minimize olefin saturation, hydrogen consumption and octane loss. The sorbent also promotes olefin hydroisomerization, which helps counter octane loss from olefin hydrogenation.
2). Applying the full range FCC gasoline once-through desulfurization process, energy consumption is lower, only 1/3~1/2 of that of the selective hydrodesulfurization technology.
3). The S Zorb’s unique chemistry does not release hydrogen sulfide into the product stream and therefore has no following problems: a) the recombination of hydrogen sulfide and olefins to produce mercaptans and b) the hydrogen sulfide removal from recycle gas and products.
4). the fluidization beds in the reactor and regenerator can realize desulfurization and regeneration reactions respectively. The lock hopper sequential control program can isolate the mid-pressure hydrogen circumstance reactor and the low-pressure oxygen circumstance regenerator, and control sorbent transport.
